Equipment

  • Crinkle-cut knife or crinkle cutter
  • Large pot or deep fryer
  • Paper towels for draining
  • Baking sheet (if baking)

Ingredients

  • 4 medium russet potatoes peeled
  • 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika optional, for seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder optional, for seasoning
  • Ketchup or dipping sauce for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes:

  • Use a crinkle-cut knife or crinkle cutter to cut the peeled potatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. Then, cut the slices into strips to create the classic crinkle fry shape.

Soak the Fries:

  • Soak the crinkle-cut potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes. This helps remove excess starch, which makes the fries crispier. After soaking, drain and pat the fries dry with paper towels.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure there’s enough oil to fully submerge the fries.

Fry the Crinkle Fries:

  • Fry the potatoes in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove the fries from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Season the Fries:

  • While the fries are still hot, sprinkle them with salt, paprika, and garlic powder (if using). Toss to evenly coat.

Serve:

  • Serve the crinkle fries hot with your favorite dipping sauces like ketchup, ranch, or aioli.

Baking Option (Alternative to Frying):

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Toss the crinkle-cut potatoes with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, salt, and seasoning. Spread them out on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.

Notes

For extra crispiness, you can fry the crinkle fries twice: once at a lower temperature (300°F) for 2-3 minutes, and then again at 350°F for 2-3 minutes to achieve that golden brown, crispy texture.
You can add other seasonings like cayenne pepper or parmesan cheese for more flavor.
