Equipment

  • Deep frying pan or deep fryer
  • Piping bag with a large round tip (or a resealable plastic bag with a corner cut off)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Tongs
  • Paper towels for draining

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Chocolate sauce caramel sauce, or whipped cream (for dipping)

Instructions

Prepare the Batter:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep frying pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure there's enough oil to submerge the funnel cake fries.

Pipe the Batter:

  • Transfer the batter to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip (or use a resealable plastic bag with a corner cut off). Pipe the batter directly into the hot oil in 3-4 inch strips, working in batches to avoid overcrowding.

Fry the Funnel Cake Fries:

  • Fry the batter strips for 2-3 minutes, turning them with tongs or a slotted spoon until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  • Remove the fries from the oil and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels.

Serve:

  • Dust the funnel cake fries generously with powdered sugar and serve hot with dipping sauces like chocolate sauce, caramel, or whipped cream.

Notes

Funnel cake fries are best served fresh and hot, but you can keep them warm in a 200°F (90°C) oven while frying the rest.
You can add a pinch of cinnamon to the powdered sugar for extra flavor.
Make sure the oil temperature stays consistent to avoid greasy fries.
